BENIGN PROSTATE HYPERPLASIA (BPH)
BPH is the natural enlargement of the prostate that occurs in older men. Since the prostate is situated just below the bladder, this enlargement obstructs the outflow of the bladder.
BPH is not cancer.
BPH can be managed either with medication (medical) or with surgery.
- Medical Therapy
A daily tablet is taken during medical therapy to relax the prostate and decrease the bladder outflow obstruction. - Trans Urethral Resection of Prostate (TURP)
Transurethral resection of the prostate is a medical procedure to remove parts of the prostate gland from the inside through the penis. No incisions are needed. - Millins Prostatectomy
If it is a very large prostate, open surgery can be done to remove the obstructive portion.
What are some of the causes of benign prostate hyperplasia?
Your prostate goes through growth cycles throughout your life. For example, benign prostate hyperplasia happens as you age and could occur due to oestrogen in the body. As men age, testosterone decreases, and oestrogen levels rise, contributing to the growth of prostate cells.
What are the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia?
Common symptoms of BPH include:
- Weak stream
- A sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder
- Getting up more than two times at night to urinate (nocturia)
- Interruption of urination (stop-start urination)
- Struggling to get the urination started (hesitancy)
- The urgency of urination, with urge incontinence in advanced cases
