CIRCUMCISION

A circumcision is the surgical resection of the foreskin of the penis. The foreskin is the piece of skin that, when gently pulled back, uncovers the head of the penis. In healthy newborns, there is no need for circumcision.

However, families may decide to have their sons circumcised for religious, traditional or personal choice reasons.

Additionally, older children and adults may need circumcision to resolve certain medical conditions. Circumcision is medically indicated to treat a narrow (phimosis) or inflamed (posthitis) foreskin.

Anaesthesia is always used for children, but for adults, it can be done under general or local anaesthesia.

During circumcision, the foreskin is released from any adhesions to the head of the penis, and then a cut is made on the top surface of the foreskin to the level at which the foreskin will be removed. The foreskin is then trimmed away. Dissolvable sutures are used to suture the skin and inner covering together. No sutures need to be removed.

What is recovery like after circumcision?
Recovery usually takes about one week. The sutures used are dissolvable, and pain and discomfort respond well to oral pain medication. The penis tip is sore and may appear bruised or swollen, and a small amount of yellow discharge is something to expect. A bandage will stay on for about four days, after which it can be removed. An antibacterial ointment is prescribed to apply after the removal of the bandage.
